Does Contrast Therapy Actually Work?

Contrast therapy involves alternating between heat exposure, such as a sauna, and cold-water immersion, such as an ice bath or cold plunge. The combination exposes the body to two very different stimuli and is commonly used by athletes and active individuals as part of their recovery routine.

What does the research say?

A systematic review and meta-analysis examining 18 studies found that contrast therapy benefits was associated with greater improvements in muscle soreness and reduced loss of muscle strength compared with simply resting after strenuous exercise. However, the researchers also noted that the overall quality of the evidence was limited and that contrast therapy was not clearly superior to other recovery methods such as cold-water immersion, active recovery or compression.

More recent research continues to support the use of water-based recovery strategies. A 2024 network meta-analysis of 57 studies involving 1,220 participants found that contrast water immersion performed particularly well for recovery of creatine kinase, a marker associated with exercise-induced muscle damage, although other methods performed better for outcomes such as muscle soreness and jumping ability.

What are the potential benefits of contrast therapy?

Is contrast therapy better than an ice bath?

Not necessarily.

Current evidence suggests that contrast therapy can be an effective recovery option, but there isn’t enough evidence to say that it is universally better than cold-water immersion, active recovery, massage or other recovery methods.
