Hot and cold therapy has taken off across West Yorkshire, and more people than ever are searching for a sauna & ice bath in Halifax. Before booking their first session, most people want to know one thing: what will it actually do for me?
They’re the two most searched sauna and ice bath questions in the UK, so we’ve answered both below. We’ve kept to what the research shows and skipped the hype.
1. What Are the Benefits of a Sauna? sauna & ice bath Halifax
The sauna has been part of Finnish life for centuries, and it’s also one of the most studied wellness habits in the world. Here’s what regular use is linked to.
Heart health. A well known Finnish study followed over 2,300 men for around 20 years. Men who used a sauna 4 to 7 times a week had a significantly lower risk of fatal heart disease than those who went once a week (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). The heat raises your heart rate and widens blood vessels in a similar way to light exercise.
Muscle relaxation and recovery. Heat increases blood flow to tired muscles and helps ease stiffness, which is why so many athletes finish training with a sauna.
Stress relief and better sleep. Time in the heat helps you switch off. Many people find a session in the evening leaves them calmer and ready for a deeper sleep.
Time to switch off. In a traditional Finnish sauna there are no phones and no screens. For many people, 15 minutes of quiet is a benefit in itself.
How to get started: begin with 8 to 12 minutes, drink water before and after, and leave the sauna if you feel dizzy or unwell.
2. What Are the Benefits of an Ice Bath? sauna & ice bath Halifax
Ice baths have gone from something only elite athletes did to something people of all ages are trying. Here’s what the evidence says.
Less muscle soreness after exercise. A Cochrane review, one of the most trusted forms of evidence, found cold water immersion after exercise reduced muscle soreness compared with resting (Bleakley et al., Cochrane, 2012). That’s why you’ll find ice baths in almost every professional rugby and football club.
Lower stress. A 2025 review of 11 studies found people felt significantly less stressed in the 12 hours after cold water immersion. It also found links to better sleep and quality of life (Cain et al., PLOS One, 2025).
A mental reset. Stepping into cold water takes focus and controlled breathing. Many people describe feeling alert, clear headed and in a better mood afterwards.
Building resilience. Choosing to do something uncomfortable, and getting through it, is a big part of why people keep coming back.
How to get started: at HICE HQ you can choose from three temperatures, 10, 6 and 2 degrees. First timers usually start at 10 degrees for 1 to 3 minutes and work down as they get more confident. Focus on slow breathing through your nose, and get out whenever you need to.
Better together. Alternating between sauna and ice bath is known as contrast therapy. Most people finish on cold for a boost of energy, or on heat if they want to wind down.
