Sauna Halifax 101: Answering the Questions Everyone’s Googling

At HICE HQ, our sauna Halifax is one of the most-used (and most talked-about) parts of the studio. Members ask us about it constantly and it turns out, the internet gets asked the exact same questions. So we pulled together the most commonly searched sauna questions and answered them properly, HICE HQ style.

1. How long should you stay in a sauna Halifax?

Most experts land on 15–20 minutes as the sweet spot for a session, with beginners starting at just 5–10 minutes and building up tolerance over time. There’s no medal for enduring the longest session, once you feel like you need to get out. That’s your body telling you it’s time to step out.

2. How often should you use a sauna?

If you’re new to it, 2–4 sessions a week is a solid starting point. Sauna use is a practice, not a one-off fix. Consistency over weeks and months is what delivers the cardiovascular, recovery, and relaxation benefits people rave about. Ramping up too fast (daily use, maxed-out heat, long sessions) tends to backfire into dehydration and burnout rather than better results.

3. Should you sauna before or after a workout?

After, for most people. A pre-workout sauna can leave you dehydrated and sap your strength and endurance before you’ve even picked up a weight. Post-workout, on the other hand, helps ease muscle tension, supports circulation, and may aid recovery, partly by triggering the release of heat shock proteins that help your cells repair. The general advice: cool down for a few minutes, rehydrate, then head in for 10–20 minutes.

4. Does a sauna actually burn calories or help with weight loss?

You will burn some extra calories thanks to your heart rate rising and your body working to cool itself, but the number on the scale straight after a session is almost entirely water weight, not fat loss. Don’t treat sauna Halifax as a substitute for training or nutrition; treat it as a recovery and wellness tool that complements them.

5. What’s the difference between a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna?

  • Traditional (Finnish-style) sauna: heats the air around you, typically to 65–90°C (150–195°F), often using heated rocks — sometimes with water poured over them for steam.
  • Infrared sauna: uses infrared light to heat your body directly, at lower ambient temperatures, with heat penetrating deeper into the skin.

Both offer similar broad benefits (relaxation, circulation, detox-style sweating) — the right one for you often comes down to heat tolerance and personal preference
